Sunday’s Gospel talks about the “Poor Woman” who put in the treasury all she had. However, many seemed quite impressed at the generosity of those who cast an abundance of big, heavy coins into the treasury box. It is no surprise that no one pays particular attention to one frail, little lady who enters the room where the treasury is. Only one person sees her, and that is the one who sees all. But she nonetheless stops at the collection box, reaches into her bag and carefully takes out two insignificant coins. They were called mites, the smallest currency used by the Romans.

She places them in the box, but their faint click is drowned out by the heavy clanking of more substantial coins from the wealthy people. No one notices her. But Jesus is impressed. He is so impressed that He points this woman out to others and cheerfully confesses that her offerings are more important, than those who have wealth and prestige.

Why was Jesus so impressed with the widow? What was it that caused him to stop and single her out of the crowd? He was impressed because He knew things about this woman that nobody else knew. Jesus knew about this poor woman’s state. She probably dressed like a poor person and looked lonely. He knew hear heart. He could feel her love for God emanating out of her heart.

Today, if you are struggling as this woman was, that Jesus knows and understands your plight, suffering, your worries and concerns. He knows all about our struggles. When the women put her coins in the treasury, it was everything she had and therefore became totally dependent upon God. All that we are and everything we have belong to God. We don’t know the final outcome of this lady, however, we can know that God took care of her and he will take care of us.
